Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic pigment and functional raw material, derived from natural chlorophyll (extracted from green plants like mulberry leaves, spinach, and silkworm excrement) through saponification, copper substitution, and purification. It is widely used in food, medicine, and daily chemical fields due to its stable properties and safety.
Basic Physicochemical Properties
- Appearance: Dark green to black powder with a metallic luster, or dark green water-soluble liquid; odorless or slightly ammonia-like.
- Solubility: Easily soluble in water (forming a clear blue-green solution), slightly soluble in ethanol and chloroform, insoluble in ether, petroleum ether and other oil solvents.
- Stability: More light-resistant than natural chlorophyll and heat-stable, but decomposes above 110℃; requires sealed storage in a cool (2-8℃), dark environment.
- Key Parameters: Common molecular formulas include C₃₄H₃₁CuN₄Na₃O₆ (molecular weight ~724.16) and C₃₄H₂₉CuN₄Na₃O₇ (molecular weight ~740.15); CAS numbers: 11006-34-1 and 28302-36-5.

- Food Industry: Approved as a food colorant in standards like China's GB2760 and FAO/WHO. It is used in frozen drinks, vegetable cans, candies, baked goods, fruit juices, and jellies to impart a natural bright green color.
- Pharmaceutical Field: Used as a pharmaceutical raw material to protect the liver, promote liver function recovery, improve leukopenia and anemia, and aid in the healing of gastrointestinal ulcers and tissue wounds.
- Daily Chemicals: Included in cosmetic ingredient lists as a colorant; also used in green medicinal toothpaste.
